Friday October 21st in the year of our lord 2005, marked the end of the first season of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby League, and luckily I was there for the championship bout between the Manhattan Mayhem and the Queens of Pain.

My colleague Kevin stumbled upon this event and brought it to the attention of the rest of the IT department, and none of us could resist something this exciting: Girls on Skates hitting each other in a heated championship match held in the South Bronx...sign me up.

Since this was the first year of the league, they didn't have a traditional facility for a roller derby, with banked rinks and barriers between skaters and audience, but instead the matches were held in the center of a large roller-rink with the audience, ourselves included, sitting native-american-style mere inches from the play surface, getting faces full of runaway 20-somethings on skates.

It was a great time, I highly recommend looking into it for next season. But for now, you can look at my pictures from the event and when it blows up, you can pretend you were there on the ground floor.
