Bedtime for Gonzo
Rest In Peace, Hunter S ThompsonI was at work at the breeze tonight and came home to my roomate James waiting with some terrible news. Hunter S. Thompson was dead. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, in what is being called a suicide. He was 67. He was survived by his wife of less than two years, Anita.

Just last week I had finished reading Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and the Downward Spiral of Dumbness, a collection of Thompson's ESPN.com columns spanning the last 4 years.

And of course, one of my top five favorite films is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the screen adaptation of one of HST's best known works. Additionally, he is always an interesting guest on Conan and he guest spotted once on The Adventures of Pete and Pete.

If you aren't familiar with Hunter's work you really should look into it, as he had developed a unique style of first person narrative combined with extravagant experimentation and opinion as fact, coined "Gonzo Journalism," which has influenced many, and is quite interesting to read.

I am surprised that Hunter would commit suicide, and can't help but wonder if it was more accidental in nature. Thompson's prediliction for chemical substances and weaponry is widely known, and just a week ago he had written about a new game that combined golf and shotguns.

Hunter was found by his son, Juan, who delivered a statement asking for his father's privacy to be respected. So at least for now the exact circumstances surrounding the mishap are unknown. The death was confirmed by his good friend Sheriff Bob Braudis, who has been mentioned extensively in the ESPN.com Page 2 columns.
